Schloss Herrenchiemsee

On Sunday, July 15th we visited another of King Ludwig II's three castles that he built in his short lifetime.  It is located on Herren Island in Lake Chiemsee, the largest Baverian lake and about 80 miles southeast of Munich.

We took the train from Munich, and it was a cloudy day with the threat of rain.  However, we had several instances of good luck during the day -- almost missing our stop or we could have ended up in Salzburg, being inside when the sky opened and it poured, and almost missing the last ferry from the island where we had dinner -- so it was a good day!  Maybe we should have bought a lottery ticket!

Once we arrived in the town of Prien on the lake, we boarded this
very cute little train for the ride to the ferry.

The Wittlesbach family certainly liked the French monarchy and culture, as this is another castle modeled after Versailles. Ludwig spent a mere nine days days here, and at the time of his death only 20 of the 70 rooms were completed.  Unfortunately, no photos were allowed on the tour, but the finished rooms were typically opulent with the Hall of Mirrors being larger than the original one at Versailles.  On the tour we were able to see one of the unfinished rooms, and it was interesting to see the brick walls, minus the finishing plaster.

We ended the day with a ferry ride to the nearby island of Fraueninsel for a very nice dinner of fresh fish from the lake. Gary had Mairenkenfilet "nach Matjes Art", a pickled white fish and Denise had Brachsenfilet, a pan fried whitefish.  This tiny island is 38 acres, has no cars, and only 300 residents.
